Diabetes mellitus: More commonly referred to as “diabetes” — a chronic metabolic disease associated with abnormal high sugar in the blood.

TYPES OF DIABETES :(mainly)

  • Type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus)- is an autoimmune condition. It’s caused by the body attacking its own cells in pancreas with antibodies. In people with type 1 diabetes, the damaged pancreas doesn’t make insulin.
  • Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes)-is called adult-onset diabetes, but with the epidemic of obese and overweight kids, more teenagers are now developing type 2 diabetes. Due to life style changes.
  • Gestational diabetes-(Diabetes that’s triggered by pregnancy is called gestational diabetes )

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Excessive thirst(polydipsia)
  • Excessive urination(polyuria)
  • Increased frequency in eating (polyphagia)
  • Recent loss of weight(without trying/dieting)
  • Delayed healing in wounds
  • Fatigue

Long Term Complications:

Type 1 diabetes can leads to the development of the following long term complications.

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Retinopathy (eye problems)
  • Kidney disease
  • Neuropathy(nerve problems)

Diet Tips:

Foods to be included Foods to be avoided
Cereals: kambu/varagu/ragi/barley/whole wheat/oats Avoid all starchy foods like yam/potato/sweet potato(sakkarai valli kezhangu)
Pulses & nuts: pachchai paiyiru/karamani/horse gram/soya beans/black channa/almonds/walnuts Avoid all fried items
Vegetables like : water content vegetables( surakai/nukkul/pudalangai/pirkangai/plantain stem/cabbage/beans/avarai/cluster beans/raddish/sundakkai/bitter guard/kovakai/plantain Avoid more spicy foods
Fruits like: apple-1 or 2 pieces or guava-1 medium size or papaya-2 pieces or black berries(naval pazham) or amla- 1 small size or kiwi fruit- 1 small size Include all green leafy vegetables Avoid oily foods
Others : include weekly twice boiled egg white-1 or weekly once fish(100 gm) in the form of gravy Avoid junk foods

Limited foods:

  • Use Oils like: olive oil or sunflower oil or gingeliy oil ( any one 3 teaspoon/day)
  • Include fish 2 pieces, weekly once in the form of gravy

Healthy tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids(water) (3-4 liters per day)
  • Don’t skip meals
  • Do some physical activities like walking, at least 45 min per day
