Infertility– A Growing Concern

Infertility is on an alarming upsurge in India with 15 – 20 million couples in India alone according to international institute of population sciences. Although most people assume that infertility in a women’s problem, up to half of all causes of infertility involve problems with the men.

Today, the male factor prevalent is one in every 5 men between ages 18 to 30 who suffer from abnormal sperm count and sperm motility disorders. Some of medical reasons for male infertility are diabetes, ejaculatory problems, mumps in adolescents, immunological infertility. Social causes like excessive use of Tobacco & alcohol, drug abuse, sedentary life style & consumption of unhealthy diet is a major concern.

A Women’s ability to conceive naturally decreases gradually but significantly from 30 years and by 36, it goes down rapidly. Major fertility concerns in women caused poly cystic ovarion disorder, pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted infections etc.,

Ladies  in reproductive age group must be encouraged to Maintain good perineal hygiene, active lifestyle modifications, healthy balanced diet, bi-annual examination by their gyneacologist to ensure a healthy reproductive system inside their body. Preconceptional counseling in a married couples gose a long way to ensure good fertility chances in them within a stipulated time period.
